My Life in Germany after I moved back there from Australia in 2019

Out and about in February

And so it was February already!

On Friday night we headed over to a Games night at Butzi friends place. The evening was fun, but we did play one very bad version of Cards against humanity in German… Which dragged on and really was more offensive than funny – not quite my game, but hey, learning something new! I also got to try “Berliner Luft” which translates to “Berlin Air” – a Mint-flavoured liquor. Eventually we got to codenames, which I felt rescued the night and was good fun. I even managed to introduce Werewords, which we played for two rounds before grabbing a train home around midnight.

Saturday we enjoyed some time outside in the sun while chatting to Amy via WhatsApp, and enjoying the early spring sun for a bit.

On the way home we stopped by the storage unit to bring some more order to it before catching up for dinner with Vincent and Diana. It was a fantastic night, we chatted away the whole evening over delicious pasta. New favourite Italian restaurant found – they even make truffle pasta in a cheese wheel!

Sunday morning I spent some time chatting to Gabe in Australia before heading out to the storage Unit once more. Yes, we spent a lot of time sorting everything! The sorting was interrupted when we headed out to to play Squash…  I managed to win the second game this time, but Manja got the third, winning  2:1 once more, but it was close this time!

The work week was busy, with either Manja or myself having an event each and every night. I started meeting some of our colleagues from our parent company whom we went to dinner with, and we had a Game night at work that week too.  We played plenty of Werewolf, which I absolutely loved hosting for!

By Friday it was Valentines day, and we were exhausted. We agreed that we would have a quite night in and I would just make a nice burger dinner for Manja… and we would clean up because we would have visitors on the weekend!

On Saturday we picked Hagen and Henri up from the trainstation and headed to the Futurium – a permanent museum exhibition showing how technology might advance, and life might change. It is free and REALLY well done. I loved it! We still had some time left when we got out, so we grabbed some Burgers for lunch before heading to the Interactive Museum for technology, which had not significantly changed since I was a kid! I remembered many of the exhibits, and loved the trip down memory lane.

In the evening we wanted to go bowling, but all the bowling alleys were already booked out. But! Simons game obsession to the rescue! We spent the evening playing Mysterium, which was such a hit that Hagen bought it for Henry the next day 😁. That’s what I call being a good influence 😇
We played two rounds, only interrupting for some Chinese take-away. In the process we discovered a REALLY good Chinese place. Will have to order there again!

On Sunday we had breakfast all together – Simons Poached eggs on avocado with Salmon – before I dropped Hagen and Henri off to the trainstation.

By the time I got back Manja had packed everything and cleaned up, and we were off to her Christmas present: A Wellness “weekend” away. We chose the Sunday and Monday because it would be less crowded and about half the price 😃
We grabbed a smart, drove down and settled in before hitting the Saunas. I have to say that there is something much more relaxing about a Sauna in Winter. We even headed outside to the lake, but I could only make myself dip in my legs – it was significantly too cold to jump in entirely.

We really only interrupted our relaxation time for some cake and eventually for dinner. When we headed over for a reasonably early dinner, we got upgraded to the premium spot! The service staff were fantastic and dinner was really nice too. We both chose the chefs selection, which was definitely the right choice!

Relaxed and happy we dropped into bed early, so that we could use the Spa area again in the morning before heading back home.

And so we did – we got up early and had a massive buffet breakfast.

After which we hit the Saunas once more. We even braved the outside again although it was rather windy. Manja even put her legs into the water this time too, but as I put my bathrobe back on, it was picked up by a gust of wind…. and the room key, which was needed to get back into the sauna, dropped into the water.
We could see it, but the water was absolutely freezing. So I thought that I decided to head around the property to the front desk and explain what happened. Of course, Manja insisted we could reach the key… so convinced me to give it a try. Remember how I said it was too cold to go in past your legs? Turns out when you jump off the pier where there are no stairs, you get totally submerged in freezing water. But I got to the key and managed to get back out. I decided to go and dry off in the sauna to re-heat myself, but have to admit that I understand the appeal of it for the first time. I felt seriously energised for the next few hours!

When we got home we had one more task to do: Move into a smaller storage space.  All the sorting of the last few weeks had meant that we were organised enough to use less space.  We headed over and inspected a few, eventually settling on a long and narrow unit, where the shelves would fit perfectly along one wall and signed up for a year. We then spent the next 2 hours moving everything once more. By the time we got home it was late afternoon and we were feeling accomplished. I made us some mushroom carbonara pasta for dinner and we spent the evening updating the blog. At this point we were only up to August last year and had some maintenance to do!

The following weekend we had a game night at Katrin and Kilians, which we had to spontaneously cancel a few weeks earlier, and spent Sunday chatting with the family before doing a bit of a spring clean… Well we really just wanted to clean the windows, but it spiralled out of control and ended up with the scrubbing of the skirting boards. C’est la vie!

Saturday we headed out to do some shopping, but we couldn’t find what we wanted and ended up not buying anything. To make up for that dismal performance we headed over to an Asian place recommended by one of Manjas colleagues, which was like a build-it-yourself Japanese Curry place. You ordered by ticking the boxes of what you want in the curry, and you get a delicious curry containing only what you like. It was delicious and awesome, the place had a really great feel to it too.

Twenty Twenty starts well!

After a day of recovery from New Years (and writing blogs!), it was already back to work for me.  It’s been a year, and I still enjoy working at my company 🙂

On Sunday we had to head back to Cottbus…  To spend some time with Hagen and play more Smash-Up!

The next weekend we spent Saturday morning sorting out storage for my stuff which will arrive soon, and dropping past Ikea for the first version of a Jewellery drawer which I promised Manja for her Bday last year. Version one is functional but with room for improvements 😁
In the evening were back to Butzi and Akis place for a games night.  I brought along Code Names which was a hit, and we also played the party game we played at Butzi birthday last year… but with less people it wasn’t that great.  Agreeing that we need to do this sort of thing more, we got home a bit past midnight and dropped into bed.

Sunday we did a bit of a New Years cleanup, where Manja and I finally had a chance to re-sort the kitchen which we had been meaning to do since we installed it 🙃
In the afternoon we decided to head over and start playing squash again, given that Manjas foot finally seemed up for it…. and I got THRASHED.  She beat me Three Nil! I really need to find a way to practice 😅

Another week passed and Friday night was date-and-explore-restaurants night.  We headed over to an Indian place which was near where Manja was meeting a friend earlier in the afternoon.  It was non-spectacular, but not terrible.

Saturday it was time for us to go to the Ball, but not before being first to wish Niko a happy birthday at midnight Adelaide time.  Turns out that the parents were looking after the kids and Niko and Anna were out with friends, so I wasn’t really first, but the thought counts!

The Ball we were heading to is the Vikings Rowing club (Wikinger Rudergemeinschaft) annual Winter Ball, and Mathias and Gabi had invited us to come along.  We did not quite have the perfect Attire, but we came along anyway, and we had a ball…  hah. But Seriously, it was a great night out.  When we arrived we said hi to Gabi and Mathias, as the guests arrived, initially skipping the photographer. Once everyone was in, Mathias, Gabi, Manja and I headed back a bit and had a photo or two taken.

When we headed back in it was already time to get seated and meet our table. Because Mathias and Gabi were officials for the club, they had to sit at the official table one over from us. The guy next to us recently started his own business, selling the experience of self-made whiskey to businesses at around €2500 upward per 30L barrel.  You get to do the whole thing end-to-end: from creating a flavour profile, regular testings and the end product 3-5 years later.
We soaked in the event, which had a fantastic atmosphere, brilliant Band (We need to learn to dance standard dances), great food and even a really cool lottery.  We spent a couple of songs on the dancefloor swaying along to the music anyway though 🤪.  Mathias was kind enough to take Manja out for a Dance properly too, she felt a bit overwhelmed but did really well!

One of the great things about the evening was a Raffle, which we spend a few euros on just to buy a ticket for Manja and Myself.  Manja drew both of them, and picked me a winner! Number 60.  Expecting to get a DVD player or wine decanter, we headed over to the table to check out what it was…  And it turned out to be an envelope, meaning we still had NO IDEA what we had won. Manja walked the raffle tables like a tiger, checking out peoples reactions as they checked out what they had won. It wasn’t too long before pickup time began and we raced over, the envelope revealing itself as being a three-course dinner for two! Score!!

As the evening drew to a close, Manja noticed someone walked away with a flower arrangement, including mini-vase. We quickly let Gabi know, who said that this was totally fine – people were welcome to pick some up… As we said our farewells, Gabi gifted us with a Wine-decanter which she had won but did not need, and even encouraged Manja to also take along a flower-vase. Loaded with nice things, we caught the U-bahn home, it must have looked hilarious to anyone watching: Two people in fine clothes taking their loot home on public transport 😂

It was a really fantastic night, and we were so happy to have been invited to it.

On Sunday I spent the morning making breakfast and then chatting to Niko for a couple of hours.  The afternoon had our scheduled re-match of squash…  Which I lost again, Three Nil.  I keep loosing but keep having fun with it 😁

The following Tuesday it was finally time for all my stuff to arrive.  I met the truck at the storage units at 11am and we unloaded everything, after which I did a basic sort: Creating piles of boxes with related content.

Manja and I had agreed that we would go through everything together on Sunday, by which time we should hopefully also have some shelves to keep things sorted.  As I was about to leave and head to work, I got a call from the removalists…  Turns out they had missed 4 boxes when they unpacked. That also explained why my numbering didn’t make sense 😂

They were at the next client, and had found said boxes mixed in.  Luckily they were not far away, so I took the tram there and headed back to the storage with 4 boxes by way of Uber.

That Saturday we decided to go shopping for a bit and see if we could find some more appropriate formalwear for both of us. We found some places we can go again when we have time and interest in buying things, but didn’t buy anything on the day. In the late afternoon we headed over to Ilkas place and spent the evening with her, chatting and making falafels. The first batch turned out to be a bit too watery to be baked, but when we fried the second set they turned out really well! We had a fantastic night but unfortunately had to head off eventually.

Sunday we dropped past a neighbours place to get the shelves and transporting them to the storage unit.

How do you transport shelves without a car you ask? Great question! By over-loading the bike and walking it with two people: like a wheelbarrow, just difficult to steer!

We put them together and then cleaned up a bit, taking some things back to the flat to get washed. We had to do this because you can’t keep unprotected clothes in the units, just in case an infestation of some sort breaks out. So we had decided to take everything made of cloth out, wash it, vacuum seal it and bring it back. With that done the storage was ready to survive without us for a bit while we headed to Oslo the next weekend ☺️

A short trip to Doris and Another Year over

While Manja got to relax a bit the next day I headed to work, and upon returning we prepared for our upcoming trip to Wiesbaden to visit Doris.  We dropped into bed early, exhausted from the week and knowing we had an early flight the next day.

The flight to Doris was uneventful – it went as smoothly as a flight can. When we got to Frankfurt airport, though, we spent just over an hour getting our rental car….  We had booked online through a third-party provider at Dollar. They, in turn, have a partnership with Hertz. But, dollar customers are only serviced in Terminal 1, and we arrived at Terminal 2.  (we found this out only after waiting in line to pick up the car…).  The person at the counter did give us directions, but they were wrong, so we walked away from the shuttle bus for 5 minutes before giving up, turning around and finding a sign to guide us to the shuttle.  Once at Terminal 1 we followed the signs for rental car pickups, until we got to the Hertz parking bay….  Where we obviously couldn’t pick up the car, we had to go to the service desk first… We found the service desk, waited in line and finally got our car. Unfortunately all the small cars had already been rented out, so we got an upgrade, which was nice.  The only problem was that he upgrade was quite a bit larger and felt like driving a limousine! Much later we saw that it was long enough to not properly fit into a standard carpark. But for all of that the car was very modern and nice, especially while driving on the Autobahn 😀

We got to Doris’ place around Lunchtime, and Doris had prepared some food for us all – a nice beef goulash prepared by the local butcher. Given that we were there on the first non-holiday, Doris hadn’t had a chance to go shopping, so we went to the supermarket together, getting everything we’d need for the next few days.  With the shopping done Doris decided to give us a bit of a tour of Wiesbaden, and we stopped at a few sights, including the Russian Orthodox Church, which was really impressive. Toward evening we were supposed to meet up with Helga and Ditmar at a local wine bar, and we headed into the general direction by following googles instructions.  When we got there, there was no wine bar in sight, we were cruising up and down what appeared to be a construction site….  Manja spotted a local resident and asked for directions – turns out google had sent us down the back way, the entrance to the place was one street further along. So we arrived a few minutes late, but with a story.  We chatted throughout the evening over wine, a meat and cheese platter and eventually some pizza – the wine bar had a deal with a local pizza place to supply their patrons with food.  Unfortunately the wine Bar already closed around 6, so we decided to take our party to the local sports bar near Doris’s place. We spent another hour chatting over wine and non-alcoholic cocktails before calling it a night and heading back to Doris’ place where I setup her computer to connect to Nikos photo blogs.

Sunday morning we got to visit the Friedwald, which is like a cemetery/burial forest. The idea is that biodegradable urns are buried around a memorial tree shared by up to 12 people. Doris had decided on doing this for her own funeral but had only been able to purchase her spot from a map so far. Knowing this, we decided to check out her tree. I got to say that this is an excellent alternative to traditional cemeteries, and I loved how peaceful the whole place is.

We lost track of time a bit and had to rush back because we were meeting Manjas Aunt Jana and her family at Doris’ local greek restaurant. Jana lives about 30 minutes away, so Manja had arranged all this a couple of weeks before. The lunch was delicious and it was nice to connect the families a bit, I think everyone enjoyed it. After lunch Manja headed over to the Palace gardens with the family while Doris and I returned to the flat and prepared some coffee and cake.  When the group returned from their walk we chatted until after dark! Eventually they had to head off, and we spent the evening together over a glass or two of champagne, some guitar music and some final touches in the updates and setups of Doris’ tech equipment.

On Monday Morning it was already time to head back. We had booked into an early flight because it was a workday and I would have to go to work making rare use of our flexible working arrangements. In the evening we were totally exhausted and dropped into bed.

Tuesday was already New Years Eve.  We spent the day lazing about the house before heading over to Katrins for the NYE celebration. She was having a party with Kilians family and a few friends, and we were welcome to come along even though Manja was coming down with a bit of a cold.  We had a delicious cheese fondue and Tiramisu before the clock struck 12 and fireworks exploded all around.  The flat has a great vantage point in terms of the view, and we were regaled with fireworks all over the Berlin skyline.  When that started to die down we even got some close-up fireworks as the gang went downstairs to set off a few of their own, some of which exploded at our eye level standing on the balcony 🙂

It wasn’t long before we had to head off to another engagement for the evening.  We decided to walk to the Alexanderplatz, soaking in the athosphere, smoke and fireworks all around.  By the time we got there, though, Manja was really not feeling well so we decided to head home instead.

Happy New Year everyone! I finally made it to updating everything that happened in 2019.  We should be up to date soon 🤪

Have ourselves a Merry little Christmas 🎶

The next week was a bit more quiet for me. Manja had her company Christmas event on Tuesday while I got to chill and update my blog!
On Wednesday night we caught up a bit earlier to walk through the Rotes Rathaus Christmas Market, right in the center of town.  It was predictably crowded, but we enjoyed a nice walk in the crisp winter air.

Symbol of Berlin: The TV tower at Christmas

Thursday evening we headed to Katrin and Kilians place for a Christmas dinner. Katrin had selected a three-course-menu, which we all cooked together.  It was a delicious and creative mix of food.  Ilka and Jana joined us as well and we chatted the night away, reminiscing about the year and talking about plans for the future.

By Friday evening we just needed a break and decided to make pizza and watch Christmas movies for the evening 🥱😴

On Saturday we prepared for the Christmas trip to Cottbus (wrapping presents, packing) and went over to the Königliche Gartenakademie.  The plan was to head over to the Christmas Gardens at the Botanic Gardens, but it was bitterly cold and we were not quite prepared for it appropriately.  Rather than freeze we decided to head home and spend another evening watching Christmas movies 🙃

Sunday, Manja headed over to Cottbus to spend time with her family. I still had to work Monday and this way Odin, the cat, would not be alone quite as long.  I made use of the free afternoon to finally get my Scrum Master Certificate from training I did in October.  Passed first go too, might have over-prepared on the day 😅

Monday night I did my last-minute Christmas shopping.  I knew exactly what I wanted to get Manja, but didn’t have a chance to actually buy it yet, so spent the whole evening at the Kudamm, mostly waiting in line for the cashiers 😂

On the morning of Christmas Eve I spent a few hours chatting to my family, coincidentally hitting the exact moment where they unwrapped my gift to them: The Annual Family Calendar. Right after I finished chatting, Butzi and Aki picked me up on their way to Cottbus. They dropped me right at the doorstep of Steffis place while entertaining me with conversation for the whole drive.  A more relaxed method of transport would not have been possible! I arrived dressed for Christmas – including a new jumper I obtained as a Gift for Manja.  She really wanted me to wear a Christmas sweater last year, but I refused, so I thought I’d make up for it this year by turning up in one… turned out to be a good idea, she really loved it 🙂

We set everything up for Coffee and Cake just in time for Hagen, Henri, Sophia and Manjas Grandparents to arrive. We feasted on too much cake before doing a big present opening moment, where gifts and wrapping paper were flying everywhere.  This resulted in an extended wrapping-paper-throwing battle between Henri and I 😁.

For dinner Steffi had organised a traditional Christmas dinner to be catered, as her kitchen would habe been way too small for a roast for 10 people.  Hagen, Henri and I went to pick it up.  The place was sending out orders like ours all night, and we arrived in our designated time-slot only to realise that we had left the order docket at home and Steffi had put her name down for the order.  A brief phone-chat later we were allowed to take along the food, which was ready to go in commercial bain-maries. Unfortunately they were filled with water to keep them hot, but not sealed at the top. This made them awkward and heavy to carry, and prone to spilling water in Hagens car.  We placed them in the boot strategically, dropping the back seat so that I could do my best to hold them. We proceeded to slowly drive the calmest possible route home, while I attended to spilling water with my (clean!) hanky.  We avoided hills, but got caught on a couple of cobblestone streets, and by the time we got back my hankies were soaked with hot water, though the car was mostly dry.  Success!
Dinner really was delicious, while we all ate too much there was still plenty left over. One of the gifts we got for Hagen was a card game called smash-up.  We familiarised ourselves with the rules and played a round before Hagen had to go home for the night and us making a plan to play more tomorrow.

We started early on Boxing Day, as I dropped Manja off to catch up with Anne – you may remember her from the wedding we went to last year.  While Manja and Anne went for a walk, I headed back and spent the morning watching fairytales with Steffi – the fairytales being a well established family tradition for Christmas 😁

Toward noon  I picked Manja up and we headed over to Hagens, where we went on a tour of his Cattle Yard. It was super interesting but also freezing cold! On our way back we picked up Kai and then played Smash-up the remainder of the day.  After an early dinner we dropped Kai off home and picked up our stuff, returning to Hagens place where we spent the evening chatting about Life, the Universe and everything.  We also patched the air mattress we would be sleeping on as it had sprung a leak…. Though apparently not perfectly successful as the next morning we awoke almost lying on the floor.

After a nice breakfast we headed back to Steffis where we spent a couple of hours before going to Manjas Grandparents place for Coffee and Cake in the afternoon.  This is the day and place where most of the family gets together and people were arriving throughout the day, including Alex and his family from Remagen.  We had many conversations and ate too much once more, and I got to try out Henris Lego “Hidden Side” kit.  I came into the picture about half way through the building process and once done loaded the AR kit onto my phone.  I got to say, they did a good job at combining lego and AR, allowing you to hunt various ghosts in your actual kit.  Great fun! As the day drew to a close Kai was kind enough to drop us off at the Train station as we headed back home.

Gift to the grandparents: LED Torches for the garden.

Wonderful pre-christmas time

The flight home from Costa Rica was a bit rough for me. Something I had eaten, probably the breakfast on the last day in Costa Rica, had given me food poisoning. I’ll spare you the details, but the plane trip home was hell and I spent the next few days in bed recovering and hardly being able to eat anything. C’est la vie!

A week later it was already December. I was feeling much better and so we took the train over to Cottbus to celebrate Manjas grandfathers birthday and spend the weekend with the family. Manjas mum picked us up from the train station and we headed over for lunch. It was a great afternoon chatting and catching up with everyone, and had fantastic food – the first I really enjoyed in over a week! I even had a coffee at the end.

After lunch we decided to visit the Christmas markets, which were really nice. One of the good things about the market in the smaller town, and that we were there a bit early, is that it wasn’t totally crowded and we had the chance to browse a bit.  One of the places I got stuck at sold Moonshine: Basically flavoured whiskey.  It was so delicious that Manjas mum decided to buy a bottle…  well a jar really, which was an awesome design.

We headed back to have dinner and then spend the evening solving the “escape room in a box” which Manja and I got for Kai last year. While Kai and I had an awesome time solving it, Manja and her mum had a nice time watching us and chatting 😂.  The Moonshine probably did not help my problem solving skills, but we still managed to figure it out in time 🙂

Tomorrow we will go and bake Christmas cookies at Hagens place and we had to bring the dough. So we braved the cold and mozied over to the supermarket to get some ingredients. A walk back and some mixing later we realised that we’d need more…. So I returned to the supermarket once more and bought another batch of ingredients for a chocolate dough! After another round of mixing we were ready for the next day.

On Sunday I spend the morning chatting to the family back in Adelaide, before heading to Hagens place to bake cookies. We got a production line going, with Hagen, Henri (his son), Kai and I stencilling out cookies while Manja placed them on trays and Steffi (Manjas mum) glazed and decorated.  A few hours later we had a couple of hundred Christmas cookies to split between us.  We ordered some pizza for lunch and chatted for a while before heading back home by train.

Roll, roll roll the dough…

Cut them out in shapes…

The next week was full of end of year work events for me, I headed to a projects end of year event on Wednesday night where the biggest project had a Christmas Dinner. It was great catching up with everyone in a less formal setting.  On Thursday we had planned our end of year event for the support team.  We initially thought about doing an underground tour, but given the cold and that we were not perfectly organised, we changed to an escape room last minute. I can’t say too much, but I quite enjoyed the space mission at Smart Room!

Friday Manja and I had our traditional Friday-night-date-night where we explore local eateries. This time we went to Zia Maria, a little pizzeria nearby, which was recommended to us.  It was really good! We chatted the night away and made our Christmas plans over dinner and while meandering back home through the Kiez.

Happy Simon looking forward to great pizza!

On Saturday we visited Falkensee – one of the suburbs we would consider moving to. We walked around for a couple of hours to see if we could imagine living there, wandering by a couple of places which are for sale.  After we roamed around for a few hours we briefly met up with Gaby and Mathias who live just around the corner from there, before going to spend the evening at a friends parents house: They were having a birthday party with a whole bunch of musician friends, just getting together and jamming the night away.  It was a spectacular evening – plenty of very skilled musicians there! I was definitely out of my league but still enjoyed the evening a lot.

On Sunday I finally had a chance to catch up with Glen and we chatted the morning away. It was so great catching up; it had pretty much been a year!  In the afternoon we took it easy, using the time to clean the flat a bit.

The following week I went bouldering while Manja had a team Christmas event. As we were in the same area, and we had some food after bouldering, I picked her up on the way home and got to meet some of her colleagues – a motley group of nice people.

Motley group of nice people

We used the remainder of the week to finalise the Christmas gift shopping 😁

Friday night Manja caught up with some friends at a local Christmas market, and I joined them a bit later in the evening.  The place was so crowded that you could barely move, so we adjourned and hit up a local wine bar instead.  The temperature was much better, everyone felt frozen from the markets, and the acoustics were much better too, we could suddenly hear each other properly without yelling 😬

dinner at the christmas market

On Saturday morning I briefly chatted to the family for Opas Birthday, before we caught up with Stefan and Stefanie for brunch. They are planning a trip to Costa Rica in January.  We shared our experiences and gave some advice about what worked for us.  In the afternoon we walked around the Kiez near the restaurant, finding a few more small bits for Christmas gifts and noticing that the Moonshine we bought in Cottbus comes from a local place here!

Sunday morning I chatted to Johan and Stef for a bit.  Making an effort to catch up with OZ friends! It was great to catch up and chat about the year 🙂
A bit later Butzi dropped by to join us on a trip to Lübben for a Christmas Market at the “Museum Schloss Lübben”.  Butzi was kind enough to drive, so we chatted as we drove. The Markets were much smaller than we expected – we were through in under 10 minutes – so we decided to check out the Palace grounds for a bit. We found some beavers and followed a “heights trail” which was installed as a kids activity for the warmer months. It was cold so there were no kids and not every part of the path was sensible to do, so we skipped the part where we would have to climb over the icy river 😂.

On the way back we also noticed that the park had other kids activities, such as trampolines and a sensory playground with spinning optical illusions and various instruments. We spent some time playing with everything, including some slow-mo bouncing videos 😅

Finally we found ourselves in the labyrinth which we Aced – following the well-trodden path to the exit 😁. While it’s not ideal for winter, I have to say it is an awesome play area for kids in summer. This type of things is one of the things Germany really does well! By the time we drove home it was evening. I made us some dinner before we dropped into bed.

Not an old mans birthday!

After our super active September, we started October with some more family time. Dad had turned 60 last year, and Manjas and my gift for him was a tour through Berlin. Last week we had discussed splitting this tour over two relaxed days as not everything we wanted to do would fit into one day…. or it would be super exhausting.

So to prepare Manja and I headed off on Friday and got me some decent winter shoes – my nice leather ones are nice… but cause freezing and wet feet in winter 🥶
On Saturday Mum and Dad dropped by and I made us all a nice breakfast and we watched some pictures of their trip of the last few months down from Germany via France, Spain and Portugal and across to North Africa.

And then it was time for us to head off: Todays first stop was at the Berliner Unterwelten, who do underground tours of Berlin. As we had some time before the tour, we took a short walk up the Flakturm im Humboldhain – the flak tower in the Humboldhain park. It was a bit chilly, but the view was awesome and this classic monument to war-time Berlin was worth seeing.

The tour we chose was one which showed the various escape routes and attempts of people out of the DDR under the wall, how and where they tunnelled, crawled and swam. One totally fascinating component was the securing of the underground stations: the western U-bahn still drove through some east-german stations but was not allowed to stop. There were plenty of traps laid out to prevent people from being able to do this, as well as spiked gates which would open based on the exact pace the u-bahn had to take through this area. It was fascinating stuff, but we were unfortunately not allowed to take photos 🙁

The tour ended at the Monument to the Berlin Wall, which we toured for a bit, before heading back and taking a walk through our local Volkspark once more. In the afternoon we split up to let my parents head off to their next engagement for the evening. .

The next day the parents returned once more for the second part of our day – this time a bit more adventurous. We started our tour at Beach Mitte, which has a lovely adventure climbing area with a view of Berlin.  Unfortunately Manjas bad foot prevented her from joining, so she entertained herself with photos. We didn’t realise how frozen the poor thing was until we came down.

Our next stop was accessed by bus – which allowed Manja to warm up a bit – and we headed to the Siegessäule. What we did not know was that there was a big protest that day, so the trains and busses were not running the whole way. We ended up walking down a 6-lane road toward it which was completely abandoned as the protest had moved through here a bit earlier.  Unexpected and nice 🙂
We climbed the Siegessäule and enjoyed the view for a bit before heading to our last “official” stop: The Berlin Clock. This technological monument was at the intersection of design and technology back in the 1970’s, before digital clocks became common. Dad even built one at home in his younger years!
Finally we sought out some dinner at an English pub. Unfortunately they had a rugby night and it was super full and loud, so we quickly re-calibrated to Indian just around the corner.

Mum was brave enough to jump:

Okay, this one was HARDER THAN IT LOOKED!

The next day I was going to head off to work only to realised that some F*cker stole my bike seat. Ah well, we ordered a new one at Amazon and installed it by the end of the week, but seriously, who does that?!?!

As the parents would leave the next week, we spent some weeknights together still, meeting up with some extended family for dinner.  On the weekend we had a final farewell dinner with my parents and many of their friends too.

The night before the parents headed off we had the opportunity to catch up one last time for the Festival of Lights kick-off, which is… well, a festival where plenty of buildings are lit up with fancy light installations. The kick off is at the Brandenburg gate, after which you can wander the various streets and watch the displays all around. Freya was kind enough to be our guide, showing us the absolute best locations. Below is a few parts of my favourites, I particularly liked the ones which made the buildings appear as they were 100 years earlier!

The last night of their stay we managed to do one more 1:1 catchup with them for dinner as a little more intimate farewell, before I dropped by the airport to drop them off the very next day. Unfortunately dad had caught a stomach bug, so he wasn’t feeling so fantastic… but well enough to fly he said 🙂

The next few weeks were all in service of our preparation for our next trip: Costa Rica!
But I leave you with this lovely album, as throughout the month summer gave way to autumn 🙂

Everywhere with family in September

And just like that we already arrived in September.

As we got up the next day we had a lovely breakfast with Manjas Grandparents before packing everything I needed for cake-baking and heading over to Hagens place. The deal was that Corinna and I would look after baby Clemens and bake cake while Manja, her mother and siblings would head over and do an escape room.

It was a sound plan, but Murphy decided to visit that day. As everyone headed off, Corinna looked after Clemens and I started making a marzipan torte. I baked the sponge layer and prepared a base for another cake which would come later.

Then I got a call from Manja: They were at the escape room and there was nobody there. They tried calling, but no one answered. They were literally locked out of the room. They decided to wait for 20 minutes and then go for ice-cream and conversation instead.

As this happened, I started working on the Marzipan torte. The central layer was to be a whipped cream and, for the first time in my life, I over-whipped the cream. 😳 I tried all I remembered from cookery school, adding teaspoons of fresh cream and manually whipping, with absolutely no success. I made the nicest sweet vanilla and almond flavoured butter though, if you need a recipe give me a shout 😅

Keep in mind that it was Sunday: which means that all shops in Germany are generally closed. Disaster! I couldn’t even head down to the supermarket to get more! As I confided in Manja, Hagen immediately came to the rescue: The local drug store Rossman at the train station would be open and they would have cream. The group would drop by and bring me what I needed once they finished their ice cream.

Relieved but feeling stupid, I continued to make the plum cake, which turned out to work out well and Corinna even had some decorative silver balls we could add into it to make it look fancy. When the group returned they were very understanding of my plight and all chipped in to finish off the cake. The cream was whipped carefully, and turned out perfect this time. It was layered in between the almond sponge, and a layer of marzipan was carefully wrapped around it. We marked the slices and Sophia showed off her artistic skills by adding little spots of cream all around the outside of the cake, onto which Hagen carefully placed almonds. Not to be outdone Sophia added a few dots in the middle and placed a marzipan rose and leaf combo onto those. By the time it was done, the damn thing looked proper professional!

We all headed back to Manjas grandparents place for coffee and Simon-made cakes. No pressure  😅

But the cake was good. Not great, but definitely good. I guess this just means I should practice my marzipan torte making skills, right?

We stayed around and chatted for a while before having dinner with the family and eventually driving back. A car return later and we dropped into bed.

The next day Manja and I had a day off and enjoyed a day outside chatting and exploring all around the Tempelhofer Feld – which used to be an airport and is now an open park for people to enjoy. We had lunch at an Indian place before we made it into the park, where we even saw some skylarks who breed in this area. One of the highlights was being able to (very very slowly) sneak up on one as it surveyed the field, getting this awesome close-up from about 30cm away.

That weekend we were off to Wiesbaden to celebrate Doris’ 80th birthday with her and the family. To be fit on the day we flew out after work on Friday, grabbed a mini-bus for the weekend and slept in a nice Airbnb nearby. We got there late and most places were already closed, so we settled for a nice pizza at a nearby Italian restaurant.

On Saturday we got up early and did some last-minute shopping, picking up flower and traditional dumplings. The dumplings were a joke from my grandparents in Germany who had jokingly said that they will send some for her birthday 😂
We dropped by for breakfast with Doris and my parents who had arrived a few days early, before jumping into the minibus and picking up Helga and Ditmar. At Helgas place we toasted to Doris with a lovely local champagne. A short drive later we arrived at our first destination, a traditional palace of still living German royalty. Rather than sell the place to pay for upkeep, they had decided to make a museum of it, which you could visit and tour for a small entry fee.

The only problem was a 5 minute walk, including a small hill, to get to the palace. Ditmar was not able to make this challenge, so they had decided to head over into a cafe and wait for us to return. Being the inclusive guy I am, I negotiated with the staff and got permission to drive the bus in to drop them off at the doorstep. By the time I got back though, they had already ordered and didn’t want to move again. *sigh* but fine. 🙄

So I walked back again and we toured the palace together with a very knowledgeable guide. Rather than staying for lunch though, we decided to pick up Helga and Ditmar and move on to the Hotel which Doris had booked for us. A little under an hours drive later, we arrived. Manja and I helped everyone settle in and carry bags before getting to our room… Which definitely was relaxing luxury! The place was super comfortable, quite and tranquil. I would love to come back here for a weekend away in summer sometime. After a bit of recovery time and some coffee and cake, we went for a short walk along a creek and found ourselves at an old church. By the time we got back we had another short break before meeting in the restaurant for a really fantastic dinner. While we feasted we discussed what else we could still do tonight, and decided that we would got and play some “Kegeln”, wich is basically an old school 9-ping bowling with wooden balls. It was fun, and it was nice to find something active that Doris and her friends could still do with 80. We played a few different game styles, from high house numbers (try and make the highest number from 3 sets, you pick the order after each shot) to low house numbers (make the lowest number with three sets, you pick the order after each shot) to fox (one person has a set of 2 shots, one of the hunters gets a shot, the fox again, the hunter again, until the fox is caught or all hunters have failed to catch him). As we decided to pack up I wanted to have a few more practice shots, getting quite focussed on improving my game. Manja wanted to snap me out of it and went to grab a ball before I could, but got her fingers caught between a returning and a sitting ball. Yikes! I could’ve sworn I heard a crunch, but she could (painfully) move all her fingers. My family jumped into first aid action, wrapping her fingers in ice. I stubbornly finished my two shots, which she was (retrospectively, understandably) a little cross about. A short time later we drove back to the hotel and dropped into bed.

The following day we all met for breakfast, which was delicious with a great variety. They also had these awesome little napkins with this quote: “Don’t try to be anyone else, there is no one better than you”. How sweet!

Not long after we drove back and dropped everyone off. A Final glass of champagne later we were on our way back home too, happy but tired.

The very next day we celebrated Kais birthday, meeting up with him to do an escape room – which we again managed to escape from. We started Saturday with a nice breakfast at a local cafe, visiting a street market and a local herb store. In the evening we headed back to Lübben for the Museumnacht, which was quite the awesome event last year. This year was a bit more muted, as the local council didn’t participate as much. When we got there we started by wandering along the river, and just as Manja lamented the lack of interesting Wildlife in germany, a Beaver swam by…  We followed him and found a whole family having a break at a nearby island! We eventually returned to the museum and the event was fun. Hagen and the committee mixed some nice drinks and provided snacks, while Corinna gave regular tours of the whole museum, including the Attic, which was a nice view behind the scenes. Eventually we had to head back home via a late train. Sunday we relaxed and finished the last few “bits and bobs” in the kitchen.

The next weekend we were invited by Tina and Stefan for a birthday BBQ. Stefan cooked it for us using his almost brand new 800 degree steak grill. It cooked meat in moments, and I have to say it was utterly delicious. As we sat outside I couldn’t help but try to capture the bubbles in the champagne! With dinner done we settled inside and played some music for a few hours, before we had to head home eventually.

On September 27 my stuff finally left Australia, thanks to the awesome Kempy who stored it and dealt with the delivery crew in arranging a pickup.
On Saturday my parents stopped by as they were currently in Berlin again on their tour back. They’d be here for a couple of weeks, so we would get a few chances to catch up. We started by heading to Alans Breakfast Club, or ABC, which is an awesome little Australian Breakfast place. From there we headed to a street market, I showed them my workplace, we wandered down the east side gallery, we had some early dinner and we visited the DDR Museum.

The next day we met up again, this time grabbing a carshare car and driving to Steffis Parents in Neuruppin. It wasn’t the perfect time to visit, as it was a bit cold, but the company and hospitality more made up for the weather. Mum even had to dip her toes in the water 😀

On the way home we approached Berlin from the perfect angle to drive past the flat we used to live in. We could not let this opportunity go to waste of course, so we stopped for a photo and toured some of the local sights. Eventually we had to get back before the day-hire rate on the car expired 🙂

Yelling anti-party-hag

The next weekend we met up with Manjas ex colleagues again for brunch – which included a whole lot of awesome food and even a bunch of deserts! In conversation about music and instruments, our host brought out this classic Accordion. This was an important day, because we all learned that I can’t play accordion 😂

In the next week we went on a boats tour with some colleagues and customers, making full use of a nice autumn evening. On Saturday it was Manjas Nephews birthday, which was on the same day as a puppet show in the Museum Lübben which lent itself to being combined. The guy presenting made all of his own puppets our of recycled materials, in part telling a story and in part demonstrating how easy it is to create things from things which are ostensibly trash. The story was probably great for kids, and could have been improved a little for the Adults watching. After the show we went to a nearby cafe for some coffee and cake, while chatting to the Family.

Eventually it got to the last weekend of August, which was also Manjas Birthday. Given that her birthday was on a Saturday we decided to host a party and celebrate into the day. The week before we got some plums from Ilkas garden, so after work I made a nice plum cake for the party. We also prepared the standard party stuff like chips and home made dips and I offered to mix cocktails for everyone. The party was a raving success – almost everyone invited came, meaning that it was a little crowded at times, with up to 30 people in the small flat at a time. Around midnight we lit some candles on a cake and served champagne to the guests as we sang Happy Birthday to Manja.
We continued to chat the night away when one of the guests let us know that a neighbour had come by and complained about the noise…  Now this was the most relaxed and quiet party I had been to, so I decided to ignore it. Eventually she rang the doorbell so long and aggressively that I took the doorbell “off the hook” and went to speak to her – it was just before 1 am.

She proceeded to tell me that

she had to get up to work the next day and that
she had called the police and they would not do anything and that
she didn’t want to be the old anti-party woman but she was 58 and needed her sleep and that
she would have to get up at 5 am and that
she had never had any problems with us before, but that this simply wasn’t acceptable, and that
she would have to go to work so that our pension would be paid….

You read that last one right, and much like the whole conversation it didn’t make much sense. I suggested that we close the windows to help keep the noise in. It was the last we heard of her, so I guess that satisfied her. Some people are really just difficult. After the last guests left around 3 we cleaned up a little, Manja got my gifts and we dropped into be exhausted.

As the most astute of you may remember, Manja took me to tropical islands last year for my birthday, in part because you get free entry on your birthday. So this year it was her turn.
I had arranged a car yesterday already so we just had to throw everything into the car and head off, so even though we were a bit bleary eyed from the night before we managed to leave reasonably early.
We found a park after driving a bit and headed in. As soon as you pass the doors you feel like you are in a different world: It’s warm and humid with the buzz of a happy crowd. We got our bracelets, which I love: You use them as a key for your locker and to charge everything to during your stay. We got changed and headed out. Each time I’m here, I’m amazed once more at the sheer size of the place. There are fully-grown palm trees as well as a range of wildlife, and nothing comes close to touching the 107m high dome top. We spent the day warming up, swimming around, relaxing at the “beaches” having some food and exploring the flora and fauna.  One of the cool new things is that they started a butterfly house.  Unfortunately some less-than-attentive customers let some of them escape into the “wild” of tropical islands. While I think it would be cool to have butterflies everywhere, I highly doubt that will happen…  But I wish the escapees the best of luck in colonising new frontiers!
The day ended too soon and we had to move on, leaving a bit before sunset to head over to Cottbus. We dropped by a shopping center to pick up some last-minute ingredients for the 2(!!) cakes I promised to make Manja and grabbing a bite to eat. The evening was spent with the grandparents, chatting a bit and watching TV.

Lovely time on Wyk on Föhr

Having only just been at the sea the week before, we arranged to have a short work-week and spend a few days with Stefan in his holiday home on the island Föhr at the north sea. It was a fair distance away and this time we decided to go by train rather than arrive exhausted from driving. Overall the trip would take us about 7 hours.

When we got on the train at Berlins main train station, it was already absolutely crowded. The first leg was spent on a fold-out seat next to the bicycles, but we entertained ourselves by playing a talk-box, which is basically a game with a whole bunch of creative questions to get to know each other a bit better.  We told some interesting stories from our past, but really had to admit that we already knew each other pretty well. Who’d have thunk it? Eventually we switched trains and got some more space, so we could comfortably sit, read and write blogs. Another couple of hours later and we were onto the ferry. It was a bit windy 🙂

On the other side Stefan picked us up and we walked over to his house, through the very pretty old streets of Wyk. After dropping off our bags he gave us a short tour of the town and the beach. On our way we had to drop by a classic place of Wyk: The 50c ice-cream place. This place is run by a guy who had been selling nothing but chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice-cream from his classic machines – next time we’re there I’ll have to take a photo of them. We wandered the promenade and beach a bit and Stefan also showed us the communal herb garden and the Stork sanctuary.

As today was a festival day, there was plenty of activity in the harbour, including a rubber-duck race, which was super cute. On our way back we went shopping for dinner and had some awesome home-made meatballs at Stefans, paired with a nice local beer he had organised. Now I’m not much of a beer drinker, but I enjoyed this one!

As darkness fell we headed out to the beach once more to watch the fireworks. This was the end of the festival day, “Föhr on fire” and this was the last year it would happen, so they made an effort. The fireworks were set-off on a barge which had been setup specifically for this. It was a spectacular sight, although it was getting a little cold. We followed the crowd and headed home and called it a night.

On Sunday we decided to take a bit of a bike tour. After an excellent breakfast made by Stefan, we pumped up the tyres of the old bikes and got on our way. It was a bit windy at times, but it was nice to be outside. Along the way we stopped to check out the milk station, where you could bring your bottles and re-fill your own milk anytime. If it wasn’t Sunday, you could also tour the factory and possibly buy cheese… And we all know how much I like cheese, right? Unfortunately it was Sunday, so we moved on after checking out the machinery and being impressed with the “pay at the pump” credit card option for the milk station. Our goal was to go to a “Watt Walk” which you can do with a guide during low tide, because the ocean totally recedes in this area. We were a bit early so we headed to a local township to grab some lunch before coming back, only to find out that the winds were so strong that the water did NOT receed today and there would be no way to do the walk. To be fair, it probably would have been too cold for me anyway 🙂 As the ride there took over an hour we decided to break up the ride home by stopping at a well-reviewed cafe. and OMG it was worth it. I had the best strawberry cake I can remember! We also saw a classic car with little “Don’t touch” notes in all the windows 🙂
Our next stop was on a place google maps found for us – an ancient grave site.  We walked the beach and the path near the beach, but could not find it. After walking past twice Stefan decided to go off-road, walking straight through some reeds, eventually finding a fenced-off area which had the grave-site in it. It wasn’t much to look at, but it was ancient, and we did have to work to find it 🙂

Stefan had one more stop planned for us – an old church which had the graves of sailors around it. These graves had stories about the people, not just names, which made them interesting. Unfortunately you had to know ye-olde-german and spend a long time deciphering the fading texts to understand it completely, but we got the gist of one or two of them. The church itself was massive and smelled a little damp… it also had a boat suspended in one corner. Sea-farer church I guess! As we were riding through the township of the church we came across this odd little store which made us stop… they sold a random collection of everything, across two old (sand-and cobble-stone floor old) buildings. It was eclectic, selling alcohol, perfumes, crystals, tea and coffee. They even sold Kopi Luwak – the coffee beans digested by cats. As tempting as it was, the average quality of the coffee did not entice me to try it here 😅
Another 20 minutes later we made it back home, in time for dinner.  We decided to head across the road to order some pizza and have a movie night in, watching a downright terrible horror movie, which made us laugh more than jump 😂.

Monday we decided to take it easy and spend some time at the beach. The weather was friendly enough to let us be at the beach, though not friendly enough for extensive swimming: The water was cold and the wind did not help in warming up once you left the water. We all waded in a bit, but only Stefan was tough enough to actually go for a swim. One cool thing at this beach is the disappearing jetty, which basically gets covered by water at high tide. This usually creates a moment when it looks like you are walking on water as the tide comes in or recedes, but due to the wind gave us more of a feeling of a sinking ship as the water exploded through the planks 😂

Around noon there was a lot of clouds and eventually the sky opened up – it was bucketing down. We very quickly grabbed our stuff and got off the beach, under the covers of the local shops. Somehow we managed to get separated, with Stefan and I waiting it out in the foyer of a chemist while Manja somehow made it into a tourist shop a few doors down. As the rain slowed we headed over to pick her up and head back home to dry off. Did I mention that Manja somehow convinced me to move around without shoes? Turns out my feet are NOT hardy enough for this – I felt like I was walking on needles the whole day, especially when we returned after the downpour and had to navigate fallen twigs. I was very happy to get back to solid, smooth, concrete when we left the asphalt and cobble-stone roads 😁

When we were dry again we headed back to walk along the shore for a bit, with Stefan showing us some of the local sights, including the lighthouse of Wyk: Which Stefan decreed as “embarrassingly tiny”, being just over a single story building in height. We were also shown the house in which Theodor Fontane stayed for a bit. Toward the afternoon we headed back via some shops, and Stefan made pasta with two sauces – a white-wine and beef creamy sauce and a tomato vegetable sauce with chilly.  Both were delicious and we all ate way too much!

Tuesday morning was spent relaxing and waiting out the rain, before we eventually decided to explore the township on foot a bit. We headed to a well reviewed and  nice-looking cafe. Unfortunately they did not have seats for us inside, so we sat outside for 2 minutes before deciding that this was way too cold. Given there were no inside seats, we continued on our way to the next cafe. Unfortunately that place wasn’t a cafe, but rather a shop selling locally made sweets, so we turned around to go back to town. We came by the first cafe again along the way, deciding to just brave the weather. We got lucky: As we arrived someone just left, so we got a table inside. Score!
We had some coffee and cake, all of which was okay. I had a chocolate salted caramel cake which literally made me feel ill about 3/4 of the way through – it was just too massive. Think chocolate mud cake with serious icing, in a large slice. Walking off our food babies, we headed to the port just outside, walking along the storm breaks and collecting some of the massive amount of plastic litter which was in those rocks. At one point we spotted a crab, and Manja and I were unsure on what to do. Stefan on the other hand just picked the little guy up and threw him back into the sea. When we asked him if this crab actually lived underwater and would survive he said matter-of-factly “No idea”. 😀

We continued along the pier and saw the source of much of the plastic, which we had initially assumed to be fishing line: The boat ropes were made of tiny strands of long plastic. I mean, I get it: It doesn’t absorb as much water, is resistant to mould…  But can’t we just use good old hemp ropes? It’s worked for hundreds of years without destroying the ocean and everything around us!

On the way back we stopped past a games store too, where we picked up an escape room in a box as tonights entertainment. When we got back it was about time for dinner, so we jumped onto the bikes once more and rode to a beachside burger place across the island. The burgers were really delicious and made for a fantastic last meal of this trip.

When we got back the tensions rose as we worked our way through the haunted mansion themed escape room. It was great fun, and we managed to solve it just in time 🙂

Wednesday was our final morning with just enough time to casually get ready and have breakfast before jumping back on the ferry and taking the long train-ride home.

Seaside Gemstones

We started August in style by heading to the east coast of Germany for a weekend. We picked up a car and used the opportunity to return a few bits and pieces which we ended up deciding against. It really is awesome how easily they exchange and refund parts! Our Kitchen and garden were both really taking shape 🙂

We drove to Dierhagen for a long weekend and to catch up with Manjas Family for a bit as several were holidaying in the same area. After a drive of a couple of hours we arrived in a cute little apartment, which was walking distance from the beach. The weather was nice, so we walked the beach for a while and chatted about life. The weather was a little windy, so not pleasant enough to tempt us into the water with more than our feet 🙂
Toward evening we returned to the main touristy part of town to find ourselves some dinner. I decided on trying the local delicacy – a Plaice  – which is a type of flat fish. We also stumbled across a brochure for the local gemstone museum, which had a special exhibition of Australian Opal, so we decided we would have to go there tomorrow!

We decided to get up super early to watch the sunrise. Well, Manja decided and I came along 😉
We managed to get ourselves outside and to the beach as the sun was rising, which really was super pretty. One of the reasons for doing this, besides the quiet and relaxing atmosphere, was to look for “Donnerkeile” or “Belemnoidea” which wash up on the shore when the conditions are just right. This morning they were not so perfect, so we didn’t find anything of note, other than plastic which we collected of course. On the way back we stopped at a cafe and grabbed a breakfast roll each which we then ate on the balcony while watching the world wake up around us.

Alex, Angi and Kids were also holidaying in the area, so we agreed to meet them at the Chrystal cave in the morning. Given that they had already explored the museum the day before, we arrived a bit earlier to have a look through it. It’s a private collection, large enough to cover a 3 Story house, mostly of precious gemstones but also of some stuffed animals, with a fairy garden to boot. It’s extremely impressive, especially given that it remains completely private! One of the highlights for me was a rams skull which had been completely covered in Gypsum crystals, from, you guessed it, Australia 🙂

As the family arrived we looked through the store a bit more, and decided to purchase a nice gemstone necklace for Manja. We headed to a local beach as a group and spent a good couple of hours looking for Amber or more Belemnoidea, while playing in the water with the kids. Eventually Manja and I headed off to explore the town a bit, finding ourselves at a little cafe which had the best iced-coffee and ice-cream-cake I have had. When we headed to the beach we drove past a little nature path, and agreed that we wanted to check it out, so we stopped by and walked through the forest for a while on an educational path meant for children but managing to fascinate us.
From there we went to another small township where we would meet the family for dinner again. We had one small problem: Very bad internet connectivity, very little cash and no ATM anywhere nearby.  As we were traveling with kids we decided on Döner and Pizza for dinner 😅
Before leaving we decided to walk the Graal-Müritz jetti, which just happened to be surrounded by extremely large jellyfish that day.

Full of food we headed back to the family accommodation where we played a card game for a few hours before heading back ourselves, totally tired from a long but fun day 🙂

Sunday Morning we headed back to the beach, still early but not quite early enough for sunrise. We decided to take a longer walk, walking along the beach for a couple of kilometers and back via some breakfast restaurants…. or at least that was the plan.  When we tried to get back to the road we had to get through a hotel, where we expected a locked gate any moment. As luck would have it though, every gate was open and we managed to pass 😊
We checked out a few places and eventually settled on a pancake-kitchen style breakfast restaurant. I had my savoury bacon and egg while manja had blueberries – both delicious and both shared 😋

We walked back to the hotel and checked out, and then went back to the beach to go for another walk. One of the cool sights was that someone was making sand sculptures along the beach, which were pretty damn good! At one point in our walk Manja suddenly jumped. There was a kid nearby playing with her dad, who also thought something might have happened based on his face. What actually occurred, though, was that Manja found a perfect little piece of Amber just lying there and grabbed it before the waves did. When we got back we still had some spare time, so we settled down to do some reading for a bit before we had to leave for the long drive back, where we were joined by the worlds most tame Seagull. It didn’t want anything, it just settled in about a meter away from us.
